Neanderthals put 35 skulls in this cave…. why?

At Cueva des Cubierta, central Spain, archaeologists uncovered 35 skulls, all of horned animals in one cave chamber. What were Neanderthals doing with all these skulls? Are they the subtle traces of a Neanderthal ritual site?

On a separate note, the Botocudo skulls are a unique conundrum unto themselves. How do people of fully Austronesian DNA exist in genetically isolated Amerindian tribes. I think it may have been a genetic isolate unto itself. Because there's other unique genetic admixtures among Amerindians in the Amazon which exist due to extreme genetic isolation over multiple thousand year period.

There is widespread of evidence of descendants being left of the union between Amerindians and Austronesians in both the Americas and the Pacific. Both Rapa Nui and other Pacific Islanders have significant Amerindian AND Austronesian DNA. There's more Amerindian DNA further into the Pacific. So we see a clear migration of Amerindians into the Pacific, and Austronesians to the Coastal Americas, i just wonder who made the first move. There's concrete evidence of the descendants of Austronesian and Amerindian groups in both the Pacific and the coastal Americas. I question who made the initial move.

It must take awhile to render the bones to the clean-bone state. A freshly killed mammoth would have to be cleaned, cooked, eaten over the course of time. Even then the bones would not be free of meat. A house made of fresh mammoth bones would be a pretty stinky place, and they would have to build it before winter.

Very balanced presentation on this topic. I agree, it is fascinating. I hope you can enlighten me about the pronunciation of Acheulean. You pronounce the ch like sh in shoe. But isn’t it a Greek word, so wouldn’t it the ch be pronounced like K? That’s how I learned to pronounce Achilles (uh-kill-Ezekiel) in college (I had to read the Iliad), Chiron, and other Greek names. Have I been wrong all along? 😅

A small correction for you: it is "Cueva DES-CUBIERTA", not "des Cubierta". The way it's written is a little word game; it uses the morphology of "descubierta" (= uncovered) to separate the 'des-' (= 'un-') from the 'cubierta' ('covered') in order to mean something like "Cave that was previously covered and now is uncovered". The way you wrote it in your video description (des Cubierta) is like a mix between French grammar and Spanish naming and results in something like 'Cave of the Cubierta's', as if Cubierta was a group of people or a family, since "des" is the French combination "possessive 'of' + article in plural"

4:32 I'm as much a supporter as I am a critic of Graham but to answer your question here: It's nothing new and not a concession. Graham has never claimed to have evidence, he just argues that more research has to be done (which both Graham and Flint agree on) and that some sites haven't been researched enough (all true and factual). That's really nothing new if you actually listen to Graham instead of going into everything he does with a bad-faith attitude and call him stupid from the getgo. So I guess for the Graham haters this is news but not to people who actually listen and enjoy his hypothetical pondering about what else could be out there.

    1) Genetics is a tricky thing. Modern Europeans are a mix of different original genetic markers. The only way genetics makes sense is by looking at modern grouping. I don't think there is enough data about archaic dna to make definitive inferences on changes in population over time. We can see where populations carrying germanic genes came from based on places we know these populations had been, but what about before then? 2) The population of survivors from a hypothetical younger dryas era Neolithic society may have been few in numbers. They spread their knowledge like a meme, but their genes may have been diluted out or dissapeared completely. 3) You can see similar things happening in Europe for example where the Germanic peoples adopted Greco-Roman civilization creating modern Europe. There is not much of a Mediterranean lineage genetically in French for example, but culturally Latin culture survives.

You do find agates along the coast. There are a couple of beaches in Oregon known for them. Not too close, but not too far away. There were multiple floods that carved out the basin and in particular, the Columbia Gorge. Huge, massive, floods. Seeing the Gorge, it's really spectacular.

The netflix show really does not do his hypothesis any favors. I believe his base hypothesis is intriguing. I would not be surprised that eventually in future generations they will begrudgingly admit that there was an antideluvian society that was destroyrd in some cataclysm. I don't believe it was one society that spread around the world. It was more likely multiple independent agricultural societies around the world. The cataclysm was probably global in scale, and the story is similair around the globe, tales by survivors of these societies were passed down to future generations. Civilization was reset so to speak. Graham does have some aort of grudge against archaeologists, and that can be off-putting. He also jumps t he gun and comes to conclusions that are pure conjecture, but the core idea has merit. The best evidence he has comes from using the alignments of many of these monuments to date them. Stone cannot itself be dated. Artifacts used to date stone can come from later cutlures, but the astrological alignments can be used to date some sites. Some of these things were time keeping constructions. If he is right about some of these correlations, then some of these monuments date back to the end of the Younger Dryas era.

Auroch were said to be very aggressive, powerful animals. I imagine the bison and rhino were as well. Keeping the horns of a well known, powerful animal to recount the amazing hunt is done by humans today. Imagine hunting an enormous auroch with primitive weapons. They would have a much more intimate knowledge of these animals. I know of hunters that hunted specific animals for years. The hunt that results in the kill is truly memorable and a trophy is kept to honor the animals and relive the experience. A ritual you might say...
